My Sisters and Brother,
The Congress of the United States could not agree upon a comprehensive
immigration reform package in June 2007. As a result, any discussion
or improvements to our immigration system will not take place
until 2009 at the earliest.
National security is of utmost
importance to all of us. Part of a strong national security program is a
strong, fair and balanced immigration policy that will keep the United
States a great power and a place that countries will continue to admire
and wish to emulate. What makes our country great is its diversity
of people and ideas. Take that away and we lose our national identity,
our national pride and worst of all our Christian compassion.
Perhaps Divine Providence is at work here by giving
our current and future leaders the chance to give due diligence to this
important moral, social and economic issue to reverse the tide of
anti-immigrant sentiment and do what is best for our country and its
people.
